Frequently Asked Questions

We, at Black Sheep Moccasins, are very happy that you chose us for your custom footwear needs. We want to assure you that we will make you the most comfortable, uniquely designed moccasin that will feel like a second skin on your feet. All of our work is custom designed by you and handmade by us, one pair at a time.  If you would like to check on your order, please email us at inquiries.blacksheep@gmail.com. Please remember that only orders that are 100% paid will be put on our production list.

 Delivery Timing and Partial Payments:

We require a minimum of ⅓ of your total as a deposit to secure your order and do a fitting. The remainder of your balance can be paid off at your convenience with no deadlines or penalties. Due to our more relaxed payment plan, only orders fully paid off will receive a delivery date. To prevent forgotten orders, we will send out email reminders to make sure your boots can still become reality. Custom payment plans can be set up as well, but are not required. Any desire to pay off a balance or pay a custom amount that deviates from a previously set payment plan, contact jadair.blacksheep@gmail.com. Upon paying off your moccasins, you will receive a delivery date no more than one year from your final payment date.

 Leathers:

Our leather is all natural, which may cause variations in grain and texture to your moccasins. Blemishes are also completely normal. Although not drastic, due to our leather being outsourced, there can also be variations in color if hides are pulled from different dye lots. Please remember this is a handmade product, so your moccasins may not perfectly match up with online photos or reference images though we will certainly try our hardest. Under rare circumstances where certain leather colors cannot be obtained in a timely manner, the customer will be contacted to discuss how they wish to proceed.

 Communicating With Us:

Any questions or concerns can be sent to us through email at inquiries.blacksheep@gmail.com.  Please allow for a 24 hour grace period to reply to your email. We can also be reached through call or text at 267-456-4487. If we do not answer, please leave us a voicemail or text with your name, question and a call back number so that we can get back to you in a timely manner. If you are contacting us about an existing order, please provide your invoice number as well.

Please Note:

Due to the constant changing in silver costs, orders that have Quicksilver fine silver buttons and have placed an initial deposit may be subject to a price change if the price of silver increases before your final payment.

Moccasin Care and Feeding:

Caring for your moccasins is easy. For mild dirt, dust or salt, you can give them a quick sponge bath or, if overly filthy, you can machine wash them on a gentle cycle in cold water. Yes you read correctly.  If you decide to machine wash them, please do so in a washing machine with no agitator. Please remove the sheepskins and laces before hand to wash separately. Air dry your moccasins till completely dry before oiling thoroughly. Dry time can vary, but averages at approximately a week. The leather we use is untreated, meaning it is more breathable and requires care like your own skin. We recommend Bick-4 oil in the warm months to keep the pores of the leather open and Mink Oil in the colder months to close the pores of the leather to help keep feet warmer and more water resistant. Sheepskin insoles can be washed separately in a cold wash. Once air dried, they can be fluffed (we have found a cat brush to be most effective) and returned to your moccasins. For more information on care and feeding, please refer to our website.

Q: If I pay my balance off early will I get a sooner delivery date?

A: No, everyone will receive a standard delivery date of 1 year from the date of final payment. There is always a possibility of getting your moccasins sooner depending on material availability, but it is not guaranteed.

Q: What if circumstances prevent me from paying off my moccasins?

A:  We have a laid back payment system because we understand life can get in the way. We do not charge interest or penalties, so you can take as long as you need to pay them off. If the time it takes to pay your balance exceeds 4 years, we will require a refit to ensure the best possible fit. A nominal charge of $50 will be added to your balance if a refit is necessary. While it is not common, if the time it takes to pay your balance is long enough to see drastic changes in material costs, you will be contacted and those changes will be reflected in your balance. Please note that we do not offer refunds on deposits or moccasins.

Q: My new moccasins are very tight, is that normal?

A: Yes, they are supposed to fit snug at first, but the leather will relax over time and mold to your foot. We recommend not wearing socks or you can remove the sheepskin insole if more room is needed to comfortably get your foot in. The more they are worn, the faster they will stretch. After stretching, while not necessary, thin socks can be worn in these. If they are still tight after prolonged wear, please contact us at inquiries.blacksheep@gmail.com . We want you to be comfortable and happy with our product.

Q: Can I order additional pairs?

A: Yes! We always love to design new pairs! Additional pairs will receive a 10% discount with previous patterns provided to us, so long as your new pair is the same height or shorter than your original pair and that the pattern is no older than 4 years.

Q: Can I upgrade or downgrade my order before they are made?

A: We can absolutely upgrade, but you cannot downgrade your order. While upgrades for buttons and braided laces are the most common, we can absolutely upgrade anything on your pair. Please note that upgrades will be an additional cost. As for downgrades, you can absolutely simplify your moccasins, but you will not receive a refund for any of those changes.

Q: What if I have orthotics or various foot problems?

A: Our moccasins are built to stretch which allows for a majority of store bought orthotics to fit. If you have a custom or hard plastic orthotics, please bring them with you for the fitting, that way we can ensure your moccasins will accommodate them when made. If you have foot problems, please let us know, so we can make sure to accommodate you as best as possible whether it be adding additional volume for your feet or adjusting the opening for our wonderful customers who cannot bend their ankles well. While these will not fix any foot problems, we will certainly work with you to make them as comfortable as possible. We can even fit prosthetics and permanent braces!

Q: What if my moccasins don’t fit, need repairs or need a resole?

A: You will receive your pattern and fitting with your moccasins. You must save your patterns to receive warranty repairs regarding the fit of your moccasins. You can contact us at any time for repairs or resoles. Patterns will also allow for full resoles, basic resoles and replacement sheepskins to be provided in a more efficient manner.  Resoling, replacements and repairs will be an additional charge.

Q: What oils should I use to condition my moccasins?

A: We recommend Bick 4 for summer use and Mink Oil for winter use. The time of year these oils are used is important. You can read more about their benefits on our website. Other oils can be used at your own risk, but please go over our care instructions on our website prior to using.
